Since 2019, Switched On Building Solutions has been retrofitting Kāinga Ora properties across Wellington, Palmerston North, Whanganui, and, most recently, New Plymouth. Our mission is to transform outdated houses into healthy homes that meet modern standards, ensuring comfort and safety for whānau for generations to come. To date, (July 2024) we have successfully completed over 120 retrofits, with around 15 more currently underway in all regions.
Challenges and Solutions
Many of the properties we retrofit require significant work, including recladding and reroofing, especially when dealing with hazardous materials like asbestos. We take a comprehensive but cost-effective approach to managing these works which aims to minimise disruption, allowing families to move into these homes as quickly as possible.
Healthy Homes Standards
Our retrofits ensure that properties meet New Zealand's Healthy Homes Standards. This involves installing insulation, double glazing, and upgrading kitchens, laundries, and bathrooms with new fittings and linings. We also address trip hazards and make modifications to ensure accessibility for residents.
Project Management and Collaboration
Our project management team, based in Wellington, oversees different regions and maintains close collaboration with Kāinga Ora. We conduct weekly catch-ups and monthly contractor meetings to ensure seamless coordination. Our in-house team includes five team leaders and a mix of trade assistants and staff who handle demolition and building tasks. We subcontract specialised services such as insulation, plumbing, electrical work, flooring, and painting to local, trusted trades.
Local Impacts
We prioritise using local trades from Wellington, Lower Hutt, Stokes Valley, Porirua, Khandallah, and Karori. This allows us to support the local economy while strengthening our connection with the community. Our partnership with Ngāti Toa Rangatira is a testament to our commitment to working closely with local iwi and we regularly utilise iwi-networked businesses to support supplier diversity.

Our efficient processes and dedication to quality ensure that we consistently deliver homes that exceed expectations for our customers.
