Haemophilia New Zealand (HNZ) had a vision to own a property that provides stability, centralisation and support for the bleeding disorders community. This has been realised through the transformation of an old hair salon into their new home in Alicetown, Lower Hutt. This brings significant benefits to HNZ, being centrally located and close to decision and policy makers, while providing functional offices and additional community support to other charities and businesses through use of a functional shared space.
To support this vision, we proposed several key enhancements. Among the most impactful was the addition of new hui rooms. These rooms are strategically placed to ensure private, comfortable kōrero between social workers, members, and their families.
Switched On Building Solutions managed the entire renovation and construction process. This involved coordinating contractors and consultants, ensuring compliance with building codes and regulations, and keeping the project on track both time-wise and financially.
We completed all structural changes and passed council inspections. Interior work included wall linings, plastering and trims, plus the installation of portal frames, a large glass sliding door, kitchen joinery, branding and painting. The team also built and donated the board room table.
A notable challenge was managing noise and disruption due to the neighboring chiropractic practice. Construction activities like drilling and hammering posed a risk of disturbing their clients. We maintained open communication with the practice and adjusted schedules to minimise disruptions, which included after hours and weekend works.
One of the standout achievements of this project is the seamless transformation from an old hair salon into a modern, state-of-the-art office. This transformation not only meets but exceeds the client's vision, creating a serene and supportive environment for all.
Our relationship with the client was bolstered by a unique connection: one of our operations managers Karl Archibald, who has personal experience with haemophilia and serves as board member, played a pivotal role. His advocacy and knowledge helped build trust and highlighted our commitment to understanding and addressing the specific needs of individuals with bleeding disorders.
This project exemplifies our dedication to not only transforming spaces but also enhancing community hauora, staying true to our client's vision and overcoming challenges along the way.
