Switched On Building Solutions was proud to support children’s charity Barnardos Aotearoa with a comprehensive refurbishment of their Palmerston North early learning centre over the Christmas break, helping to create a fresh, functional and welcoming environment for tamariki, staff and whānau alike.
With the centre closed for Christmas holiday period, our team at Switched On Building Solutions worked to a tight timeframe to complete the upgrade before the centre reopened. Having previously worked with Barnardos, our team had a strong understanding of the environment and what was needed to meet their expectations.
The project involved a full interior refresh, and several key upgrades designed to enhance both functionality and comfort. Working with our trusted subcontractors, we completed:
- A full interior repaint
- Supply and installation of new underlay, carpet and vinyl flooring
- A new kitchen installation
- Installation of a new art bench
- Redoing the exterior deck for safer and more appealing outdoor use
- Replacement of the existing trough sink and installation of new joinery
- Installation of new toilets, partitions, a nappy changing area, and a heater in the children’s bathroom
- Installation of LED lighting installed throughout the centre
This refurbishment has created a safer and more modern environment for both children and kaiako, supporting the important mahi Barnardos does every day to provide quality early learning.
Undertaking a project of this scale over the holiday period came with its challenges, particularly in coordinating multiple trades and suppliers during a traditionally quiet time of year. However, when a delay occurred with the installation of new countertops, we maintained open and proactive communication with Barnardos to manage expectations, successfully keeping the project on track.
Our continued work with Barnardos Aotearoa reflects the strong partnership we’ve built over time and our shared commitment to creating spaces that support the wellbeing of tamariki. The success of this project is a testament to the value of collaboration, careful planning and a team that’s dedicated to delivering high-quality outcomes — even when working to tight deadlines.
